Shark Valley Flooded 2008

In 2008 Florida got hit by Tropical Storm Fay. Tropical Storm Fay was unique in the way it's the first storm to zigzag across the state, making landfall 4 seperate times, and cover every square inch of Florida. The storm wasn't impressive as far as high winds or damage, but it did bring a ton of rain. We got 8-9 inches in Broward County and in Central Florida some areas got close to 30 inches of rain. For me Fay was a fun storm. I got let out of work early, went to the movie theatre to see Tropic Thunder with Natalie and Phil, then went back to my apartment and our friends Tim and Riki joined us for a pizza party while we watched the media make a big deal over a storm that was nothing but rain. Even our daily thunderstorms were more violent. Fay didn't even produce thunder and lightning in our area.

Well a little over a month after Fay Natalie, Phil and I went to Shark Valley.  We got warned ahead of time that part of the road was blocked due to flooding and we couldn't go to the tower but decided to go ahead anyways. It was a good decision. This was one of our most epic rides ever.

Since there was so much water we didn't see a whole lot of gators. Being locals that see gators all the time that didn't matter.

We parked on 41 and rode our bikes into the park. There was flooding from the start. Once we got about halfway the road had "road closed" signs but we kept on pushing. We did what I call third world biking to get to the tower and pushed on through water up to a foot high crossing the road. The weird part was watching the fish swim across the road.

The water was so high that where all the channels were that crossed the road there were whirpools. The gators and snakes were coming up to the road, the road looked like glass, and the clouds were reflecting off of everything.

Right outside the park heading towards the parking lot.
There's usually ten feet of grass before the canal.
Even in the drier spots the water comes up to the road.

Taken from the tower. In the right side of the picture that is the road that looks like a river.

The river is way over it's banks here.
